SciVal Experts
fa_experts
SciVal® Experts is an expertise profiling and research networking tool pre-populated with the most useful and yet most difficult information to compile - deep publication histories - making it easier for you to track the output of your grantees and enable collaboration.
Unlike competing tools that merely return lists of abstracts, SciVal Experts applies the Elsevier Fingerprint Engine to produce a visual semantic index, or Fingerprint, of relevant concepts that instantly exposes a researcher's distinctive expertise, based on publication history.
SciVal Experts helps you answer important questions such as:
- How productive are the researchers we have funded?
- Who is in their co-author networks?
- How can we help them form new partnerships?
- How can we demonstrate their accomplishments?
- How can we define new areas of research?
Rooted in Scopus® – the world's largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources – SciVal Experts is also flexible, able to incorporate institutional data and individual researcher updates for a more comprehensive picture of institutional expertise.
SciVal Experts helps you:
- Track researcher productivity by revealing expertise via publication histories
- Drive collaborations between researchers by exposing network and publishing connections – plus unseen opportunities
- Reduce administrative burdens: an in-house profiling system can take at least one to two years; SciVal produces an in-depth database in little time
- Assure precision and accuracy through weekly profile updates and quarterly manual reviews that disambiguate author names and clarify profile data
- Manage data efficiently: sophisticated web services allow institutions to download SciVal Experts data for further analysis, and/or upload institutional data into SciVal Experts
By applying the Elsevier Fingerprint Engine, SciVal® Experts produces visual semantic Fingerprints that instantly reveal researcher expertise ranked by the uniqueness and frequency of the terms that define the publications. The Fingerprints expose valuable connections among researchers, allowing you to identify expertise and facilitate collaboration. SciVal can also aggregate Fingerprints to help you better define emerging areas of research.
Track productivity and enable collaboration with SciVal Experts
Every researcher profile delivers a comprehensive list of papers – plus drill-downs on publications, grants, research trends, similar experts and more.
With Fingerprint visualizations, users can understand the distinctive expertise of researchers at a glance.
Identify potential collaborators by accessing a list of experts with Fingerprints similar to another researcher.
SciVal categorizes profiles into focus areas or other groups to meet your agency's needs.
Is SciVal Experts a stand-alone tool or can it be integrated into a grants management processing system?
Like the other SciVal solutions for funding bodies, SciVal Experts can function as a stand-alone tool or it can be integrated into the institution's grants management processing system. For more information on how SciVal Experts can be integrated into an existing system, please contact us.
How accurate are the profiles within SciVal Experts?
Profiles within SciVal Experts are the most accurate in the industry. No method is perfect, but our approach, which is a combination of computer matching and manual linking, gives the most precise profiles with the minimum effort on the customer's part. Elsevier disambiguates author names and manually reviews the profiles, ensuring publications are associated to the correct author and the profiles are reliable, complete and current. Profiles are automatically updated once a week and manually reviewed quarterly.
Is a subscription to SciVerse Scopus required?
SciVal Experts will deliver complete profiles based on Scopus® data regardless of an institution’s SciVerse Scopus subscriptions status. In fact, any updates made to profiles during the manual review process will be incorporated into Scopus. But Scopus subscribers will be able to follow links from SciVal Experts to SciVerse Scopus, while non-subscribers are restricted to preview pages only.
What is required to implement SciVal Experts?
You only need to provide the first name, last name and affiliation of each researcher. Additional data, such as email addresses or educational degrees, will allow for more detailed profiles. If you would like to categorize researchers by focus area, this information is also required. We ask you to input the metadata into a spreadsheet provided by Elsevier.
Was SciVal Experts originally developed by Collexis?
Yes, SciVal Experts was originally developed by Collexis. Elsevier acquired Collexis in 2010 in order to expand the SciVal suite of performance, planning and funding solutions. By combining Elsevier's content with Collexis' semantic technology, Elsevier has been able to provide institutions and researchers with new ways to collaborate, showcase accomplishments and improve grant related workflow efficiencies. The acquisition of Collexis accelerates Elsevier’s ability to help researchers and decision-makers establish, execute, and evaluate research and funding strategies as well as improve their return on investment.
